Minecraft color codes use § followed by a character: §0–§9 and §a–§f are 16 colors; §l is bold, §o italic, §n underlined, §m strikethrough, §k obfuscated, and §r resets formatting. Server plugins often use & instead of § (for example, &a for Green). In JSON text for tellraw, signs, and other features, use a color name, such as "color":"green", and since 1.16 you can also use hexadecimal colors #FF5555。

How do I type the § symbol?
You can’t type § directly in vanilla chat. § is used in server configs, MOTDs, plugins, and resource packs. On Windows, hold Alt and type 0167 on the numeric keypad, or click Copy on this page. To send colored text in chat, use the tellraw command。
What’s the difference between & and §?
§ is the formatting symbol recognized by the game itself; & is an alternative provided by plugins such as EssentialsX, which convert & to §. Vanilla Minecraft doesn’t recognize &.
How do I make gradient-colored text?

Why do color codes go before formatting codes?
Color codes reset previous formatting, so put the color before the formatting code. For example, §a§l is bold Green, while §l§a is just Green.
