How Portal Linking Works
- For horizontal coordinates, divide the Overworld coordinates by 8 to get the Nether coordinates, or multiply the Nether coordinates by 8 to get the Overworld coordinates. Y is not converted. Negative values are rounded down (-12.5 → -13).
- When you enter a portal, the game searches for existing portals near the converted coordinates in the target dimension: within 16 blocks in the Nether and 128 blocks in the Overworld.
- To link two portals, build one in the Overworld first. Then build one in the Nether at the coordinates calculated here, and light it.
- The Nether has a Bedrock ceiling (Y=128). After conversion, keep Y below 128.
One block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld: divide the Overworld X and Z coordinates by 8 to get the Nether coordinates, or multiply Nether coordinates by 8 to get Overworld coordinates. Y stays the same.
